Trying to make a static prop look like it is in mid motion, like it is only taking a moment to think of its next move, is very difficult. What are some things you focus on while building a static prop?

I spend extra time and detail on where the hands are... what they are doing. I try to have them grabbing for some thing just out of there reach. If it does not have arms, the position of the head is very important. The right amount of tilt and positioning can add to the personality of the prop.

I like to take a few photos of the prop before it is fully done to see how it looks. If it appears like it was in motion while the photo was taken, I know my vision should come across to other people viewing it. It is very hard to really "see" a prop you have worked on for weeks since it was just materials. You have seen every aspect of the prop and its hard to not look at all the pieces and imperfections while viewing it completed. Viewing it in photos can really help make final decisions with the prop.

The details make it looks real or not. Many people over the years have thought several props we have would jump at them so they were scared to pass by them. Those seem to always be the ones that we took the most time to make it "just right".
